  • Doctors believe disruptions in serotonin levels play a role in migraine--a severe, one-sided headache often accompanied by other symptoms such as visual disturbances, dizziness and nausea--although they are uncertain as to exactly how. Migraines often run in families, and there are a number of common migraine triggers.

    Hormones

Many women experience migraine headaches owing to the sudden drop in estrogen levels before menstruation. Birth control pills can also contribute to migraine headaches.

    Light

If a migraine sufferer looks directly at the sun or a bright light, he runs the risk of triggering a migraine.

    Odors

Malodorous or strong-smelling substances such as perfumes and turpentine can be migraine triggers, as can tobacco smoke.

    Diet

Foods containing tyramine are one of the most common migraine triggers. These include aged cheese and meats, red wine, fava beans and foods whose flavor is enhanced with monosodium glutamate (MSG).

    Sleep

Sleeping in late on the weekends or switching from day shift to night shift can cause disruption in sleep sufficient to trigger a migraine.

    Weather and Geography

Changes in barometric pressure experienced as storm fronts move across a region often trigger migraines, as do changes in altitude.
