Carrying pepper spray is a recommended safety precaution when traveling through bear country. In a research study out of the University of Calgary, pepper spray used on grizzly bears was found to be 94 percent effective in stopping a bear's aggression. In addition, most of the bears sprayed (88 percent) left the vicinity.Source:
