In 1955, physicist Nelson Beck discovered the medical use of ultrasound, when he captured the first ultrasound image. The original discovery of high frequency sound waves occurred in the late 1790s by Italian physicist, Lazzaro Spallanzani. Conducting experiments on the navigational abilities of bats through darkness, Lazzaro concluded that the bats utilized sound in place of sight.
