<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: An Unfair Reputation
No dog is dangerous simply due to its breed. Rottweilers are, by temperament, placid and patient dogs. They are not unusually aggressive and were not bred to be fighting dogs, but rather as working dogs, primarily herders. As a rule, they are also intelligent and often good with children.
On the Other: Training Is Essential
Because of their size and strength, poorly trained and/or socialized rottweilers can wreak havoc in a very short time. Rottweilers have a strong protective instinct; this is why they're often used as guard dogs. They must be taught to understand when their protective behavior is appropriate and when it isn't. Obedience training is a must. Male dogs should be neutered.
Bottom Line
Dog bite attacks and injuries caused by rottweilers are due more to poor training and/or socialization -- plus the inherent size and strength of the breed -- than to the dogs' temperament. Individual dogs' personalities will always vary, but a well-trained, well-socialized rottweiler can be as gentle and loving as any dog.
