  • Stomachaches and nausea are common symptoms and complaints from men, women and children. Thankfully, both are not usually serious conditions, but there are exceptions. Identifying and eliminating the causes are the first courses in treating pain and nausea.

    Significance

Stomach pain is a signal that something is amiss in the body. An infection, a toxic substance, bacteria or stress can bring on a stomachache. Nausea is the stomach's natural reflex to attempt to rid the body of the offending presence.

    Considerations

Women of child-bearing age should first rule out pregnancy; if menstruating, the pain and nausea can indicate a problem in the reproductive organs. Strep throat, food poisoning, food allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, stress, anxiety, hunger, overindulgences, thirst, indigestion and gas can all cause stomachaches and nausea.

    Identification

Stomach pain may be localized, originate from the stomach or start elsewhere. Appendicitis, kidney stones, bladder infections, reflux diseases, ulcers, bowel blockage, heartburn, diverticulitis and constipation all cause stomach pain and nausea.

    Warning

A tumor, cancer or inflamed organ can cause pain in the stomach and accompanying nausea. Sickle cell anemia and shingles are other causes.

    Expert Insight

Always seek a doctor's care and advice when stomach pain and nausea are present if you are being treated for cancer, are unable to have a bowel movement, see blood visible in vomit or stool, are experiencing chest, neck or shoulder pain, notice that your stomach is hard and tender, have trouble breathing, or experience an injury to the stomach.

    Warning

Stomach pain and nausea that lasts longer than a week, or worsens over a 24- to 48-hour period, should be treated. Bloating, painful or frequent urination, prolonged vomiting, weight loss, and dehydration also are reason for concern and need medical attention.
