Rubber-soled shoes called plimsolls have been around since the late 18th century. However, in 1892, with a new process of joining rubber and cloth, Goodyear, a division of the U.S. Rubber Company started the production of the first sneakers, called Keds. The name "sneakers" came about through advertising: They were so quiet when wearing them, you could sneak up on people.
