  • Omega-3 and omega-6 have been in the news frequently in the past few years, leaving some to wonder about these fatty acids and what the benefits are to consuming them. Omega-6 is found in many cooking oils and in eggs, while omega-3 is found more commonly in fish and nuts. The two work best when used together.

    Mental Wellness

Omega-3 and omega-6 are both beneficial to those who suffer from ADHD and from eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia. Omega-3 can also be useful for those with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and depression.

    Eye Problems

It is thought that macular degeneration can be improved by taking Omega-3, and Omega-6 can help dry-eye conditions.

    Cancer

Some studies have suggested that fatty acids, such as omega-3 and -6, can improve outcomes for cancer patients, though this is a controversial finding. However, establishing a routine of taking the fatty acids does seem to reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer, such as breast cancer.

    Cardiovascular Benefits

Omega-3 has shown promise in lowering cholesterol, and both omega-3 and omega-6 can lower blood pressure.

    Skin

Photo dermatitis and acne may both be helped by omega-3, and eczema may be improved by consuming omega-6.

    Weight Loss

Although not conclusive, there has been evidence to suggest that both omega-3 and omega-6 may help build muscle mass when used in conjunction with exercise, and may help dieters lose more weight.
