In Canada, you must store your welding tanks in an upright position, have a safety cap in place, have no smoking signs placed in the room and hold the tanks together with a plastic covered chain or non-conductive belt. You should store oxygen and propane tanks 6 meters (18 feet) apart.

On the Other: Fewer Guidelines in the U.S.

In the United States, the guidelines are not as clear-cut. The general feeling is that the tanks are well-constructed and meant to be in tandem on a cart. You should store the oxygen and acetylene tanks apart, but a small distance is sufficient.

    Bottom Line

While the general consensus is that as long as the cylinders are in good shape, tanks can be stored within a few feet of each other. Between acetylene and oxygen, there is a huge capacity for explosion, so even if there is no strict guideline, the farther tanks can be separated, the better.
