An alcohol evaluation is a screening tool designed to reveal whether or not a person is engaging in harmful or risky drinking.
Function
An alcohol evaluation is designed to detect drinking problems early on so that you can receive treatment at the beginning of the addiction process.
Settings
An alcohol evaluation is frequently used in medical settings, such as a doctor's office or an emergency room. Courts also order alcohol evaluations in cases involving DUI (driving under the influence) or domestic violence.
Types
The most popular alcohol evaluation screenings include the Michigan Alcohol Assessment Test (MAST) which consists of 22 yes/no questions, the CAGE which consists of four yes/no questions and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) which consists of 10 questions with a range of answers (e.g., from "never" to "daily").
Features
While most alcohol evaluation screenings consist only of questions, some also include a physical assessment such as a breathalyzer test or blood alcohol content (BAC) to determine whether you are under the influence of alcohol.
Considerations
These screenings only work if you are willing to answer the questions openly and honestly. It is not difficult to guess the intent of a question and lie to achieve a better score.
