The foot is a complex body part. It is very small compared to the size and weight of the rest of the body, but it absorbs the full impact of many of our activities.
About
Foot pain is generally located in one of two regions: the front of the foot (fore foot) and the back of the foot (hind foot).
Causes
Most foot pain is caused by one of the following: shoes that do not fit or are poorly structured; poor posture, which can change the way we walk; medical and inherited conditions; high-impact exercise; or repetitive activities that stress the same area of the foot.
Symptoms
Pain in the sole of the feet may present as a persistent achiness. The foot may develop boils or blisters. You may experience swelling and decreased range of motion.
Diagnosis
Depending on the symptoms, physicians will look at possible medical disorders, such as diabetes, arthritis and diseases affecting muscle and motor control. An examination of the foot and an inquiry regarding heredity will also be used to diagnose the problem.
Treatment
If the problem is caused by an underlying medical condition, the condition will be treated as well as the problem. Also available are foot soaks, special shoes along with orthotics and pain-relieving medications.
