  • Homeowners love vinyl garage doors and siding because they last for a long time and never need repainting. However, this is not always true. Vinyl can fade over time, or homeowners can change their preferences on the color they wish their siding or garage doors to be. If you own a vinyl garage door, you have probably wondered if it can be painted. The answer is yes, but before you run outside with a can of paint, you need to know a few things.

    Finding the Right Paint

Latex and oil-based paints will not work on your vinyl garage door. Instead you will need to find a special paint made of acrylic and urethane resins. This kind of paint is not always found at a home improvement center. Instead check paint stores. The label of the paint should say that it can be applied to vinyl surfaces.

    Preparing the Vinyl

Vinyl garage doors should be properly scrubbed with a scrub brush and soap and water before painting. Power washing will probably not be sufficient to clean the garage door surface. After the vinyl is prepared you are ready to paint. For painting, pick a day that is not windy, rainy or extremely sunny. Paint in the shade.

    Paint the Vinyl

Use a paintbrush and paint roller to paint the vinyl garage door. Always follow the paint manufacturer's directions for painting vinyl. Note that you do not want to paint a dark color onto a light-colored vinyl, as heat can build up in the vinyl and cause it to crack or buckle.
