According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Americans spend more than $50 billion each year treating low back pain. Because low back pain affects so many people and can be costly to treat, it is important to know its causes and how to avoid them.
Age
A simple cause of low back pain is age. When people get older, tone, strength and elasticity decrease. The discs in the lower back also become less flexible, providing less cushion for vertebrae.
Overuse
Low back pain can also stem from overuse. Lifting something that is too heavy or overextending the back can cause spasms or strain or tear muscle.
Disease
Lower back pain can be caused by diseases such as arthritis, viruses, diabetes and osteoporosis, as well as birth defects.
Scar Tissue
When the back heals itself, scar tissue can begin to buildup. Over time, that accumulation of scar tissue can cause further injury.
Pinched Nerve
If the discs between your vertebrae have degenerated, nerves may become pinched by bone, causing severe pain. One of the most common victims of this pain is the sciatic nerve.
