Birth control can start working at various times, depending upon where you are in your menstrual cycle. Within six days of a period, birth control is nearly immediately effective, although it is prudent to wait one week before engaging in unprotected sex. Outside of that 12-day window, it can take up to a month for birth control to start working--that is, until the end of your body's next cycle.
