  • There are five general principles that an exercise prescription should include: mode of exercise, intensity, frequency, duration and rate of progression.

    Mode

The mode of exercise should specify the type(s) of exercise to be performed. This will likely be in the form of cardiovascular activity such as walking.

    Intensity

The intensity will often be relative to a person's maximum heart rate. For most patients, it should be from 55 percent to 90 percent of maximum. For heart patients, it should be from 40 to 75 percent.

    Frequency

A prescribed exercise will typically be done three times a week at first and increase over time.

    Duration

Duration is directly related to a patient's beginning physical ability, but always will be between 15 and 60 minutes.

    Progression

Progression combines frequency and intensity. Once a patient is exercising five or more days per week, the intensity must increase.
