  • Early cervical cancer often has no symptoms at all, which is why annual screening via Pap smear is so important. Later stages of cervical cancer may display symptoms.

    Vaginal Bleeding

Vaginal bleeding between periods or after intercourse can have a variety of causes, but it could be a sign of cervical cancer. Post-menopausal bleeding may also be a sign.

    Vaginal Discharge

Increased vaginal discharge may also occur. This discharge can vary significantly from woman to woman--it may be foul-smelling, contain mucus or blood or be thick or watery.

    Vaginal and Pelvic Pain

Pelvic or vaginal pain, especially during intercourse, may also be a sign of cervical cancer.

    Cervical Bleeding

If you can identify cervical bleeding as distinct from general vaginal bleeding--for example, after the insertion of a diaphragm--it may be a symptom of cervical cancer.

    See Your Doctor

None of these symptoms is unique to cervical cancer; all have other causes, some serious and some benign. The only definitive method of diagnosing cervical cancer is via Pap smear or biopsy by a doctor.
