  • A football visor snaps over the grill of the face mask to reduce the glare and intensity of sunlight while playing. In general, most youth, college and professional sports leagues allow the use of snap on visors in helmets, provided they are nonobtrusive and are fitted firmly.

    Getting the Visor

In general, you do not need to a ophthalmologist's or eye doctor's prescription to get a visor. Many designers such as Oakley and Under Armour will sell to anyone. You may need a letter from an eye doctor or team physician if there is any hesitancy on the part of the league in allowing a visor (which is unlikely). Explain to them your need, be it medical or a safety concern, and they should feel more open to the idea of allowing it. There may also be statues in the leagues rule book for such allowances.

    Corrective Eyeware

It is rare to find a visor with corrective prescription. No manufacturers make a football visor with a prescription. However, that doesn't mean bringing one in to your eye doctor can't result in them making one for you. Ask whether it's possible. Alternately, sports goggles ARE made to be corrective and can fit snugly onto your face and won't bother you during a game. All leagues from youth sports to the majors allow (and encourage) the usage of sports goggles. They can be used in addition to a tinted football visor.
