  • A gantry crane is a piece of heavy equipment used to lift objects and transport them across a factory floor, at a construction site or between ship and shore in a cargo port. Many manufacturing and transportation businesses would not be able to operate without the use of gantry cranes.

    Heavy Lifting

The gantry crane can lift heavy equipment such as tractors, vehicles, shipping containers, steel beams and other construction materials, and loaded pallets. For lifting, it has a hoist hanging from a fixed horizontal beam.

    Traveling and Fixed Gantry Cranes

The gantry crane is supported by vertical uprights that are set atop rails or wheels, which allow the crane to move back and forth at the site as needed. Some operations have a series of fixed gantry cranes that are in use at preset positions. Traveling cranes are fixed on rails that run the length of a factory floor.

    Container Cranes

A container crane, also known as a Portainer, is a type of gantry crane that is set dockside, and rests on a single vertical upright. The horizontal beam projects out over the docking position of container or cargo ships, and can be raised or lowered according to the ship's height.

    Mobile Gantry Cranes

Mobile gantry cranes are smaller versions of the gantry crane that can be moved and assembled around a worksite or wherever needed for lifting and moving heavy objects. These can be powered by an electric motor along a set of rails, or moved on a set of heavy rubber tires. Smaller mobile gantries can be moved manually.

    Fixed and Adjustable

Mobile gantry cranes can have a fixed height or adjustable height. They can also be configured with a single leg against a fixed wall or structure (flange-type).
