Charles H. Pajeau invented Tinkertoys, an improvement over the spools and sticks he saw children playing with, in Evanston, Illinois. Pajeau exhibited Tinkertoys as toy windmills in a drugstore window at a New York toy fair in 1914 and went on to sell 2.5 million Tinkertoys by 1918.
