    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

    N. Joseph Woodland received a patent for his bar code concept in 1952, after working on an idea to automate the grocery store checkout process for four to five years. Woodland later worked on Universal Product Codes, or UPCs, while employed at IBM. His bar code patent expired in 1970.
