Anxiety and depression, two frequently debilitating mental health issues, can be caused by a variety of circumstances and conditions.
About Anxiety
Anxiety, typically a type known as Generalized Anxiety Disorder, refers to an excessive, irrational and hard-to-control anxiety.
About Depression
In psychology, depression refers to an enduring feeling of despair, sadness or lack of joy that affects the afflicted person's ability to function in everyday life.
Cause of Anxiety
The exact cause of anxiety is unknown. However, experts believe genetics, abnormal levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, and factors such as stress, life changes, loss and substance withdrawal can all contribute to anxiety.
Cause of Depression
Depression can have one root cause or many. Abuse, conflict, death and loss, genes, major life changes, illness and substance abuse all commonly contribute to depression.
Rare Cause of Anxiety
Very rarely, a tumor of the adrenal gland, known as pheochromocytoma, can cause symptoms of anxiety. This condition causes an overproduction of epinephrine and norepinephrine, which control heart rate and blood pressure.
