This procedure involves using a sperm donor and medically inserting the sperm into the uterus. However, before undergoing this procedure, it helps to have a few tips.

Choosing a Donor

The first step in getting pregnant alone is choosing a sperm donor. Ask your regular ob-gyn for a referral to a fertility specialist. He or she can guide you through the process of selecting a sperm donor. If you don't have a regular ob-gyn, contact the American Fertility Association. They can connect you with a specialist in your area.

Intrauterine Insemination Process

Once you've chosen the sperm donor, it's time for the procedure. According to the Mayo Clinic, before the IUI process, a doctor will conduct an ultrasound to make sure you are ovulating and check the condition of the ovaries and uterine lining. You will lie on an exam table, and a speculum will be inserted directly into the vagina. After the speculum is inserted, the doctor will put a catheter into the opening and use a syringe to insert sperm into the uterus. Then, the catheter and speculum will be removed. After the procedure, you will need to lie down (flat on the back) for about 20 minutes.

Determining If the Process Worked

Approximately two weeks after the procedure, you can take a home pregnancy test. If results are negative, don't worry; you still might be pregnant. Contact your doctor and ask for a blood test. This will give the most accurate results. If you aren't pregnant, you can try this process again. A doctor might try this procedure for several months before you become pregnant.

Cost of Intrauterine Insemination

Before getting IUI, talk with your insurance provider. Some insurance companies won't cover the procedure. According to the Advanced Fertility Center of Chicago, the cost of IUI can range from $300 to $800 per treatment.
