The first Fram oil filter was introduced in 1932 and the goal of the company was to introduce an oil filter that was easy to install and maintain. The company has won awards at NCMA conferences and AAPEX shows. Users of Fram at Rate It All had mixed reviews when it came to their products. The positive elements of the filters are: the outside was sturdy and had a good feel to it, the silicone anti-drainback valve works exceptionally well, and the oil capacity was larger than other filters.

On the Other: Not as advertised

According to the DSL Reports, the oil filter was not as easy to remove as the company advertises and the filter is not constructed very well. The reviewer also knocks the filters for using a cardboard endcap instead of a metal one. The reviewer says the Fram is the poorest filter he has ever seen in a vehicle. On the website Rate It All, consumers had mixed reviews of the Fram filters. Those that did not like it said that their oil pressure is not what it should have been, the filter has poor engineering and has a small filtering surface area.

    Bottom Line

While many automobile users with basic knowledge of vehicles did not seem to have a problem with Fram filters, the people who know cars well or work as mechanics who took the time to take the filter apart feel that it is poorly constructed of cheaper material, and the filter is overpriced. Therefore, because of these mechanics, it appears that Fram filters are not as good as other brands for their price.
