The bladder is the organ that stores urine until you empty it when you go to the bathroom. Bladder muscles contract, and fluid waste leaves your body. When your bladder does not empty completely, you may be suffering from urinary problems.
Urinary Tract Infection
Urinary tract, or bladder, infections occur when bacteria enters the urinary tract. A bacterial infection makes you feel as if you have to empty your bladder even after using the restroom.
Urge Incontinence
Urge incontinence, or overactive bladder, is a condition in which you have a strong urge to urinate day and night. The U.S. National Library of Medicine says the condition causes bladder spasms.
Causes
Some causes of bladder problems include bladder cancer, kidney stones, diabetes, menopause, pregnancy, using a catheter, enlarged prostate and sexual activity.
Symptoms
The U.S. National Library of Medicine lists other symptoms of bladder trouble to watch for: leakages, cloudy or bloody urine, burning and lower abdominal cramps.
Examination
Your doctor will perform an abdominal and/or a rectal exam when you are unable to empty your bladder, or feel that you are. This will determine the cause of the problem.
Treatments
Treatments for various bladder problems include urinary medications like VESIcare, dietary changes, retraining your bladder, and Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor.
