<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Possible Safety Hazard
It was believed in the past that laminate flooring, due to the adhesive products used in installation, carried some amount of VOCs, or volatile organic chemicals, which can cause health problems. Also, due to their slick surface, laminate floors pose a safety hazard.
On the Other: Safe With Upgraded Materials
Today there are products on the market used by laminate manufacturers to eliminate the need for adhesives, such as QuickStep, a locking technique for floors. Also, due to the nature of its smooth surface, harmful bacteria that typically becomes trapped in other flooring, such as carpet, cannot cling to laminate, as it is nonporous. This makes rooms more sanitary.
Bottom Line
Laminate flooring is safe for your home and you will most likely enjoy the benefits of laminate for years to come, but take proper precautions. Check whether the manufacturer's installation components are adhesive or locking. Also, secure more slippery areas of your laminate floor with area rugs.
