  • The pressure in your eye is very similar to blood pressure. Pressure in the eye is needed to remove impurities, just as pressure is needed to circulate the blood throughout your body.

    Identification

According to the International Glaucoma Association, eye pressure, or intraocular pressure, is created by a watery fluid called aqueous humour. This fluid flows throughout the eye, removes impurities and drains through an organ called trabecular meshwork.

    Problems

The eye is prone to many of the same problems as other organs. If the aqueous humor is not draining from the eye fast enough, it will cause pressure to build within the eye, which can lead to ocular hypertension and glaucoma. Left untreated, blindness can occur.

    Prevention/Solution

According to the University of Michigan's patient care website, doctors do not know what causes ocular hypertension or glaucoma. It is recommended that everyone over 40 and those with a family history of these diseases be tested yearly.

    Testing

Optometrists use a machine to measure the pressure in the eye. It is painless and involves air being sent into the eye. Results are immediatel.

    Warning

Ocular hypertension and glaucoma typically have no symptoms until there is significant nerve damage to the eye.
