  • There are many elements of a laptop computer's hardware and software that can cause them to operate at a slower-than-normal speed. But there are also a few simple ways you can speed up your laptop and improve its performance.

    Remove Adware

Many computer manufacturers drive down the cost of their laptops by letting third parties install trial programs on the default setup. Users see this in the form of pop-ups and reminders when they turn on their computers and reach the desktop screen. These programs are often called adware because the software encourages you to buy specific products. In order to remove these programs, click the "Start" button, go to the Control Panel and choose "Add/Remove Programs." Select any product that offers a free trial or is not necessary to use your laptop and click "Remove" to uninstall.

    Upgrade RAM

Most laptops offer the option of increasing the random access memory (RAM) on the unit. To do this, you can go to a specialty shop that deals with repairs and upgrades and have them install more RAM, or you can allow the manufacturer to perform this upgrade. You can also buy a module from an online retailer and install the RAM yourself. You can slide out the old units in your laptop and plug in the new RAM module to increase its capacity and speed.

    Web Browsers

Most laptops run Internet Explorer because it is compatible with most Web pages, but it tends to be slower than some of its counterparts. Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari often provide a faster alternative than Internet Explorer, so you might give one or all of these browsers a try.

    Defragment

A laptop's hard drive becomes fragmented over time, which means that files get scattered and your computer cannot access information as quickly. Windows has a tool called Disk Defragmenter. Click the "Start" menu and select "Accessories," then "System Tools," and click on "Disk Defragmenter." This program can take several hours to complete, depending on how severely fragmented your files are. But running this program can improve laptop speed and performance immediately.
