Acupuncture has widely become a complementary treatment for infertility. This form of treatment works best to promote fertility when the main cause of the problem is functional, such as hormonal imbalance, problems in ovulation and endometriosis.
Procedure
Small, sterilized needles are placed along specific points called acupuncture points in order to bring balance to the natural functional systems of the body.
Benefits
An acupuncture study by the University of Virginia showed significant improvement on hormonal function, which promotes the normal menstrual cycle from a woman's body. Acupuncture also helps the body be stress-free while undergoing other fertility treatments.
Effectiveness
The Reproductive Medicine and Fertility Center in Colorado conducted a study in 2004 that showed marked effectiveness of acupuncture as a complementary treatment with assisted reproductive technology procedures. Acupuncture was shown to help increase pregnancy rates from 36 percent to 51 percent.
Risk
Minimal risk is involved with acupuncture treatment for fertility, although improper application might result in miscarriage.
Warnings
To avoid risks and detrimental effects of improper treatment with acupuncture, consult only licensed acupuncturists.
