In the National Football League, there are seven officials on the field during a game: a referee, head linesman, umpire, back judge, line judge, side judge and field judge. Fans are probably most familiar with the referee; he wears a solid white cap instead of a black one and announces the penalties to the crowd. The referee oversees the entire officiating crew and has the final say on penalties.
