  • Scabies is a frustrating, intensely itchy condition caused by mites borrowing under a person's skin. Topical medications can easily cure scabies. But the condition is highly contagious, and the mites can live away from the infested person's skin for a couple of days. If you know someone who has scabies you want to avoid getting infested yourself.

    Avoid Interaction

Avoid anyone who has scabies until he has been treated and is no longer contagious. A co-worker who is infested should be required to stay off the job until he is cured.

    Do Not Share

Avoid sharing your space and personal items with anyone who has scabies. Because scabies can live off their host for a short time, you could become contaminated by sharing a common item such as a blanket, a stuffed animal or even an office chair. Additionally, avoid sharing bedding, towels and clothing with anyone in your home who has scabies.

    Good Hygiene

Wash your hands, body and hair often if you are around someone with scabies. Although good hygiene does not guarantee that you will avoid an infestation, it can reduce your chances.

    Keep Everything Clean

Clean your home and work areas thoroughly. Focus on any areas the small mites may be, including carpets, couches, towels, bedding and clothing of the infested person. Vacuum one or more times each day. Additionally, wash and dry clothing, towels and bedding that may have come in contact with the mites. It is also a good idea to bag up and remove stuffed animals, comforters, decorative towels and any other items that might carry the mites. Keep these items sealed in the bag until the scabies is cured.
