Diabetics cannot control the blood sugar levels in their body. Even though a healthy body can handle sugar intake, it can still cause problems such as weight gain. Our bloods sugar levels depend on more than just food.
Exercise
When a person performs a rigorous task, the body breaks down glucose (sugar) for fuel. However, even light chores and standing can lower glucose levels.
Insulin
People who are diabetic take insulin to prevent their blood sugar levels from staying at elevated or low levels for long periods of time, however, insulin must be stored properly to effectively control glucose levels. In addition, other medications are known to raise blood sugar levels.
Sickness
When a person gets sick the body releases hormones to fight the infection. These hormones usually degrade the effectiveness of insulin. In addition, vomiting and stomach problems may prevent a person from eating and taking in sugar, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Warning
Diabetics should not consume alcohol. It only takes two shots of liquor to keep the liver occupied with processing the alcohol and prevents it from using sugar reserves, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Tips
The food a person eats has the biggest effect on sugar levels. Eating at regular times helps the body anticipate blood glucose changes and prepare for them accordingly.
