A CPAP (or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine keeps the airway open for people suffering from sleep apnea. It allows a more restful sleep and uninterrupted breathing throughout the sleep cycle. Using distilled water will ensure your machine a longer life.
Mineral Deposits
Using distilled water will prevent the buildup of mineral deposits and prolong the life of the CPAP machine.
Contaminants
Distilled water does not contain any contaminants that could be left in the CPAP after the water has evaporated.
Where to Find
Distilled water can be found at your local supermarket or big box store. Your local hardware store should also carry it.
Other Maintenance
Aside from using distilled water, the only other maintenance required is changing the filters on a regular basis.
Considerations
Boiling water is not the same as using distilled water. Boiling water actually increases the content of minerals in the water. If distilled water is not available, filtered water would be preferred. Never use mineral or spring water.
