According to Birkenstock, its shoes provide "orthopedically correct support," following the contours of a healthy foot and easing pain caused by plantar fasciitis.
The Facts
Excessive stretching of the tissue extending the length of the foot causes plantar fasciitis--inflammation of the plantar fascia.
Causes
The Mayo Clinic says small tears in the plantar fascia cause plantar fasciitis. The causes of these tears include excessive stretching of the tissue, weight gain, continual wearing of shoes with little or no arch support, the arch collapsing due to flat feet, an unusually high arch and/or a sudden increase in physical activity.
Shoe Design
Birkenstocks have a foot bed of cork and latex, which the company says helps cushion the foot, with contours to ensure proper weight distribution, raised arches to support the foot's shape, a toe bar and deep heel cups.
The Toe Bar
The toe bar stimulates circulation by allowing the toes to flex and grip, helping exercise the leg while the wearer maintains balance.
Heel Cups
According to Birkenstock USA, its "deep heel cup keeps the foot's natural padding under the heel" enhancing stability as you walk.
Treatment
The Mayo Clinic states that plantar fasciitis treatment commonly includes the use of orthotic shoes with good arch supports.
