Human growth hormone (HGH) therapy is popular among bodybuilders and antiaging enthusiasts. Doctors prescribe HGH for deficiency, short stature caused by illness and growth-development problems in children.
History
Since the 1950s, doctors have used growth hormone from the pituitary glands of human cadavers and domestic animals to treat deficiency. The synthetic form of HGH, Somatropin, has treated hormone deficiency and poor growth in children and adults since the 1980s, according to Somatropin.net.
Children
Congenital (present at birth) and acquired growth hormone deficiency (GHD) result in failed physical development of muscles, fat and bones in infants and children, causing them to look much younger than their age. Turner Syndrome and Russell-Silver dwarfism are syndromes treated with HGH.
Women
HGH releasers sold by nutrition companies claim to alleviate symptoms of menopause and PMS in women, which include headaches, mood swings, bloating, hot flashes, fatigue and loss of libido.
Men
Adult men with adult onset growth hormone deficiency (AGHD) experience premature aging symptoms, which include depression and a decrease in muscle strength, libido and energy. HGH is used to treat similar symptoms in male menopause (andropause) as well.
Athletes and Bodybuilders
Some bodybuilders prefer HGH to steroids because it produces lean and toned muscle without the undesirable side effects, according to Karlis Ullis, M.D., and Joshua Shackman, Ph.D, for Mesomorphosis.com. Athletes supplement with HGH for similar reasons and rehabilitate and prevent injury.
