Heat stroke occurs when your body temperature hits 104 degrees F or higher as the result of high outdoor temperatures, intense physical activity, or some other factor that raises your body temperature. The effects of heat stroke are life-threatening.
Neurological Impact
Heat stroke can impact your neurological functions in a variety of ways, ranging from loss of the ability to speak or think clearly to loss of consciousness or coma.
Rapid Heartbeat
Your heart rate can rise into dangerous territory as a result of heat stroke, as your heart works harder to help your body cool itself.
Muscle Fatigue
Heat stroke often causes muscle weakness in its early stages. As it progresses, muscles can become rigid or limp, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Brain Damage or Death
Left untreated, heat stroke can have long-term effects on the brain. Without immediate medical attention, heat stroke can even cause death.
Other Long-term Effects
Individuals who survive heat stroke sometimes experience sensitivity to heat for months after their original ordeal. Some heat stroke survivors experience kidney damage, varying in severity from case to case.
