The phonograph was invented by Thomas Edison in 1877, but it used a wax cylinder to record and reproduce sound. The first disc recordings and an associated player, the gramophone, were invented by Emile Berliner in 1887. Berliner's gramophone was the ancestor of all modern turntables.
