  • Tile is gorgeous and easy to care for. In the bathroom new tile can provide an instant face-lift and improve your resale value. Mixing tile can be tricky, but with the right combinations of color and design you can easily create a new look.

    Mixing In A Small Bathroom

If you have a bathroom that is standard and tends to be on the smaller side don't use intricate patterns. What you need to do is mix a subtler blend of tiles. Some elaborate accents might be okay used in one or two places in the shower. Use one color with corners of bright colorful Mexican style tile. Or go for traditional pool blue tiles with fleur de lis patterns every 100 or so small tiles. Consider doing a classic black and white tile floor using large tiles, and then do the walls and shower all in white, putting a black based design as a border. Don't do everything in a dark color because it will make the room appear smaller. Bright tile opens a space up and creates a sense of size and luxury.

    Mixing in A Big Bathroom

If you have a large bathroom you have many more tile mixing options. If you like mosaics, this is the perfect place to try them out. Do the floor in a traditional mosaic style and then do the shower in a mixed media style with broken glass and mirror. Or if farm animals is a favorite, mix them into a solid color with abandon. Let the floor mimic the shower and bath, and accent it all with a simple one-color tile on the walls. Or do an intricate and evocative Mexican tile on every single surface, including the ceiling. Do something fun like tiny back and white tiny, and add in some tiles with letters or words to create the look of a giant crossword puzzle.

    General Rules For Mixing Tile

Smooth and rough surfaces can be mixed for effect. Just know that rough, unfinished tile can feel rough underfoot. Solid colors and patterns can mix, but two patterns have to be completely complimentary (like several types of fish or animals) or subtle (small striped and solids). Watch your color choices when choosing tile, because the perfect color in a few tiles is great--too many of that perfect color could look like too much. Also, you can always use white tiles with splashes of color to create a signature look.
