Codeine, formerly known as methylmorphine, is one of the least expensive and most commonly used prescription drugs in the world to treat mild to moderate pain and cold symptoms in tablet, capsule or liquid form. That said, it is an opiate narcotic and has side effects to consider.
Side Effects
Taking codeine is considered safe but can lead to mental/physical addiction, slowed heartbeat, constipation, allergic reactions, sleepiness and slowed breathing.
Less Common Side Effects
Less common side effects include nausea, vomiting, fainting, lightheadedness, confusion, hallucinations, odd behavior, agitation, seizures, urination problems, skin rashes, sweating, dizziness and lack of sex drive.
Benefits
Codeine suppresses coughs via over-the-counter cough syrups and lessens pain as a key ingredient in pain relievers. According to the FDA, it has been shown to be a trusted narcotic pain reliever for new mothers as well.
Prevention/Solution
If taking cough suppressants like Actifed and you experience dry mouth, WebMD says to solve this problem by sucking on sugarless hard candy or ice chips, chew gum or drink lots of water.
Warning
Codeine should never be given to anyone other than who it was prescribed to, nor should it be mixed with alcohol or other drugs, which can heighten side effects or cause death. Cough/cold suppressants should not be given to children age 6 and under, according to WebMD, as they are not safe or effective for this age group.
