  • Blood pressure is a measure of how hard your blood is pushing against the walls of your veins while it is pumped. Blood pressure is lower when standing due to gravity.

    Low Blood Pressure

Low blood pressure means the blood in your veins is not pushing hard enough, resulting in a lack of blood in vital organs. Organs need a constant source of fresh blood because it carries oxygen to cells, carbon dioxide away from cells and purifies liquids in the body.

    Standing Blood Pressure

When you are standing, gravity pulls the blood in your veins down, concentrating it in your lower organs. Your blood pressure may drop as your heart pumps harder to get the blood back into the upper organs.

    Dizziness from Standing Up

If you feel dizzy when you stand up your blood pressure experienced a fast drop, which can cause you to see black spots or even faint if it is severe enough.

    Risks

The risks of continued low blood pressure include stroke or organ failure. However, the risks of low blood sugar upon standing are much lower. You may faint, lose consciousness briefly or have difficulty participating in active sports, but your life will not be threatened.

    Remedies

You can keep your blood pressure more level by helping your heart do the work it needs to do. When you rise, do so slowly, breathe in and flex your calf muscles. This helps pump blood out of the feet and lower veins and up into the heart. If you feel faint while lying down, pump your fists to help signal the heart to pump harder.
