  • A hamstring is the long muscle that runs from the bottom of your rear end down to your knee. The hamstring is the muscle in back of what we commonly call the "thigh."

    Function

The hamstring is used in walking, running and all standing motion. It works in conjunction with the quadriceps, which are the muscles in front of the thigh, to provide mobility to the upper leg.

    Hamstring Injury

The most common hamstring injury is a pull. In this injury, the muscle is extended slightly beyond its reach, and it loses some ability to generate power. It takes about two or three weeks of rest to recover from a moderate hamstring pull.

    Exercise

Nearly all exercise requires the hamstring, so it is an easy muscle to strengthen. In particular, biking, squatting and lunging will improve the condition of the hamstring.

    Stretches

The most common hamstring stretch is a toe touch. This can be done in the standing or seated position. Straightening the legs fully will give the biggest stretch, but people with tight hamstrings may not reach their toes with straight legs.

    Healthy Hamstrings

Maintaining strength and flexibility in the hamstring will protect you from injury. Loosening your hamstring can also ease tension in your back, as the muscles are very connected.
