High blood sugar, also known as hyperglycemia, occurs when a persons blood sugar level is above 130 mg/dl during a period of fasting. Blood sugar levels when eating will spike but drop when performing strenuous activity. Normal levels for blood glucose are 70 to 125 mg/dl.
