  • Egg and dairy allergies are among the most common food allergies, particularly in children. Both types of allergies manifest with similar symptoms that can range from mild to severe. If you suspect that you or your child has a food allergy, see your doctor.

    Skin Reactions

Egg and dairy allergies frequently manifest through atopic dermatistis, an itchy rash also known as eczema. Urticaria, the red, swollen, itchy welts known as hives, is another common skin reaction.

    Gastrointestinal Problems

Egg and dairy allergies commonly cause digestive problems, such as abdominal cramps, vomiting, bloating and diarrhea.

    Respiratory Problems

The respiratory tract is often affected by egg and dairy allergies, with symptoms including nasal congestion, sneezing, wheezing and asthma.

    Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a rare but very serious and life-threatening reaction to egg and dairy allergies. During anaphylaxis, the airways can narrow, blocking breathing. Other symptoms of anaphylaxis are facial flushing, itching, swollen lips and reduced blood pressure. Anaphylaxis requires immediate medical attention.

    Prevalence

According to the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, egg allergies affect approximately 1.5 percent of young children, while an estimated 2.5 percent of children younger than 3 are allergic to milk. However, both egg and dairy allergies often are outgrown with age.
