On the most basic level, an Internet filter searches the code of a website for specific keywords that could indicate the site is improper. At this level, Internet filters are quite successful at blocking inappropriate websites. In addition, Internet filter providers also monitor websites and create a database of websites to block, regardless of what the exact content appears on the requested web page.

On the Other: Vulnerable to Server Side Content

Webpages provide content in two methods: client side and server side. Client side means the client's web browser will receive code from the webpage, which will be interpreted by the browser and then generate the content for the user. Server side refers to the user logging into the website's server and viewing content there. With server side, code is hidden from the user, and therefore, Internet filters are vulnerable to content that may be generated.

    Bottom Line

Internet filters aren't foolproof, nonetheless, using filters offers parents and guardians an effective way of providing Internet safety for their children.
