  • A water distiller is a device which uses heat to remove contaminants such as salts and heavy metals from water. This process is considered superior to other water treatment methods, as it makes the purest water.

    Types

There are two types of distillers; batch units and continuous flow units. With household batch distillers, water is poured directly into the boiling chamber and heats to boiling when the unit is turned on, then shut off once all the water in the boiling chamber has evaporated. They produce 3 to 10 gallons of distilled water per day. Continuous flow units, also known as automatic units, are connected directly to a water supply. The water level in the boiling chamber is automatically maintained; as distilled water is removed, the unit will produce more. The water is stored or directed to area of use.

    How It Functions

Water distillers have a boiling chamber where water is boiled until evaporated, producing water vapor. Because rising water vapor cannot carry pollutants, the vapor produced is relatively pure. The water vapor is captured, cooled and condensed back into a liquid form, and filtered before it becomes pure, distilled water.

    Maintenance

Residue accumulates in the boiling chamber as water is boiled away. It is essential that the minerals and compounds be removed periodically. Buildup from hard water may be difficult to remove. Commercial cleaning agents are available. Do not use strong mineral acids like hydrochloric acid to clean a distiller.

    Longevity

The lifespan of a water distiller depends on the amounts of impurities in the water supply. It also depends on how often the distiller is operated and how well it is maintained. A high-quality water distiller should last ten to fifteen years as long as it is properly maintained.

    Benefits

Water distillers kill bacteria and viruses as well as eliminate other contaminants. They also prevent mineral buildup and will help maximize the life of water-using appliances such as coffee makers. They also save money; when purchased individually, a bottle of water costs about a dollar; a gallon of distilled water costs about twenty-five cents.

    Warning

Some water distillers remove necessary minerals from water. Distilled water may disrupt the natural pH level in the stomach, causing heartburn and acid reflux. Drinking water may benefit from a multi-stage system rather than a water distiller. These systems balance mineral content and pH levels as well as removing contaminants.
