  • Sociology is the study of social interaction between humans and society. The requirements for a Sociology degree will vary depending upon the school you are attending. Core courses are often required to fulfill degree obligations.

    History

    The reasoning that Sociology is based upon dates back to Ancient Greece. However, as a scientific discipline, Sociology did not emerge until the early 19th century.

    Core Courses

    According to Stanford, the following core courses are required for a Sociology degree--Classics of Modern Social Theory, Statistics, Social Research, Evidence Evaluation and a Seminar for Sociology.

    Foundation Courses

    In addition to the required core courses, a specified number of foundation courses are required which may include--Social Movements, Social Psychology and Social Stratification.

    A total of 60 units of course work in the major must be completed to attain a B.A. in Sociology.

    Potential

    According to a 2007 study administered by the American Sociological Association's Research and Development Department, approximately two-thirds of Sociology majors stated they were very satisfied with their jobs after graduation.
