  • Entroviruses, a common family of viruses, can trigger the development of type 1 diabetes, especially in children. Treatment often follows a strict regimen that can be daunting to those afflicted with the condition.

    Condition

Viral infections that cause type 1 diabetes occur in the pancreas, destroying insulin-producing beta cells. Accordingly, multiple daily insulin injections are often required.

    Reuqirements

Those afflicted with type 1 diabetes must get lots of exercise, because physical activity has a regulating effect on glucose levels, reduces symptoms and prevents long-term damage from the disease.

    Diet

Diet is an important factor in treatment and must be tailored to the individual, but carbohydrate intake must always be controlled.

    Possible Effects

If periods of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) occur, a glucagon injection could be required. These episodes can be severe and result in loss of consciousness, so the injection should be kept on hand at all times.

    Complications

Those afflicted with type 1 diabetes are four times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease that could require taking medicines called statins. Consequently, treatment should include measures to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, such as not smoking, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol and maintaining a healthy body weight.
