Bloody stool in a baby's diaper can be alarming to a parent. Although the problem is typically minor and will resolve itself, you should discuss it with your pediatrician.
Common Causes
Common causes include food allergies and small anal tears caused by the baby straining during a bowel movement. If the baby is breastfed and the mom has cracked nipples, the baby could have ingested blood
Infections
If the child has diarrhea with blood, an infection might be the cause.
Misconceptions
The majority of all babies will have blood in their stool at least once during infancy. During the newborn stage, blood also can show up in urine.
Urgent Issues
If the child is in severe pain, has been experiencing bloody diarrhea every hour for several hours and is lethargic, call your doctor or go to the emergency room. Possible explanations include bacterial infection, food poisoning or even cystic fibrosis.
Important Symptoms
If the child has dark red, jelly-like blood and is experiencing abdominal pain, call your doctor immediately. This could indicate a bowel obstruction and that the blood supply to the bowel is being compromised.
