History
Brothers Gustav, Albert, Leopold, John George and Charles Stickley started their first furniture company during the 1880s. The brothers worked together and in competition for the rest of their lives to establish the Stickley name and revolutionize furniture in the United States.
Location
Born in Wisconsin, the Stickley brothers opened their first company in Pennsylvania before setting up shop in Binghamton, New York, in 1884. Today, the L. & J.G. Stickley Company is headquartered in Manlius, New York.
Features
Stickley Furniture prides itself on exquisite craftsmanship, including such features as pinned mortise and tenon joinery, pinned chair joints, dovetailed cross rails, ship lap planking and keyed tenons.
Significance
Due to its exceptional quality and proud history, antique Stickley Furniture garners hefty sums at auction. In December 2009, sixteen Stickley pieces combined to sell for close to $1 million, with a Stickley hand-hammered copper chandelier going for $230,000.
Fun Fact
The Stickley brothers' last name could have been Stoeckel. Their father changed it to Stickley in order to sound more American.
