Cataracts are a condition that causes the eye lens to become opaque and cloudy. This causes a reduction in vision and can lead to eventual blindness. Cataracts often develop in dogs as they age.
Types
According to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, the same treatment options for human cataracts are available for animals. At this time, there are no effective nonsurgical options to treat a dog with cataracts.
Lens Removal
The affected lens needs to be removed during cataract surgery. A machine that uses ultrasonic sound waves can be used to remove the lens from the eye.
Lens Replacement
After having the lens removed, a new synthetic lens can be implanted in the dog's eye. Very small sutures are used to help the eye heal.
Considerations
According to Dr. Paul Gerding, of the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana, dogs can still lead normal lives with cataracts, and vision changes and blindness do not affect dogs the way they affect the quality of life of humans. However, cataracts can cause inflammation so they should be monitored carefully.
Cost
The cost of cataract surgery for a dog ranges from $1,500 to $3,000, which usually includes a recovery period of several days in the veterinary hospital.
