  • Highlighter stains are common household occurrences, especially if you have children or if you work from home. A carpet stained by a highlighter can be especially distressing, regardless of the color of the stain. While there are many carpet cleaning products on the market, you may find quicker and cheaper success by trying a few basic stain-removing techniques.

    Baking Soda

Take a damp cloth and gently dab at the stain, removing as much of the stain as possible. Pour a thin layer of baking soda over the stain and using a clean, damp cloth, work the soda into the stained area. The stain should be completely removed in a few seconds. Allow the area to dry and then vacuum up any baking soda that may be left in the carpet.

    Dish Washing Detergent

Pour 3/4 cup of water into a mixing bowl and add 2 tbsp. of dish detergent. Combine the mixture until you begin to see bubbles. Pour the mixture onto the stained area and lightly massage it into the carpet using a clean, white cloth. When the stain is removed, rinse the area using a new, wet, white cloth to remove any dish detergent. Allow the area to dry. Dish detergent is a very mild cleaner that does not leave behind a residue, so it is very conducive to carpet cleaning.

    Steam

Tougher, more set-in stains may require steam cleaning. This can be accomplished using a common household iron. Turn your iron on its steam setting and allow it to heat up. Place a clean, dry, white cloth over the highlighter stain. Put your iron on top of the cloth and let it remain there for a couple of minutes. Check the status of the stain. Repeat this process until the stain is completely lifted from the carpet and absorbed into the white cloth.
