  • Almond butter is one of the more nutritious, when included with other healthy nuts such as walnuts and pecans. While all nut butters are good for you, almond butter offers its own set of benefits to consider.

    Health Benefits

Almond butter helps to lower blood pressure and bad cholesterol counts; it helps to control blood sugar levels and is rich in antioxidants. It is a good source of calcium and magnesium, and is high in fiber, making it a good prebiotic.

    Dietary Uses

Almond butter is a healthy substitute to using margarine or butter spreads on toast or bagels. It can also be used in recipes or snacks; or added to soups or salad dressings; and gives good texture to baking products.

    Topical Uses

Almond butter can be used to make moisturizing lotions and nut body butters similar to Shea butter. It is often found in beauty products to treat wrinkles, dry hair and skin; the butter can be used in homemade topical butters as well.

Types of Almond Butter: Processed or Unprocessed

The benefits of almond butter are derived from the unprocessed composition of the almond. To ensure unprocessed butter make it yourself; or, if purchased from health food and grocery stores, check it is not processed with trans fat, sugar or preservatives. Choose raw almond butter, never buy roasted almond butter. The commercial process of roasting nuts is considered equivalent to deep fried foods.

    Considerations

While almond butter has been associated with good cholesterol, keep in mind almond butter contains the highest amount of calories and fat over all the other nut butters. Two tablespoons daily are a safe guideline.

    Cautions

While almond butter is used as a substitute for those allergic to peanut butter, keep in mind when serving recipes to guests or young children that while peanut butter is not a nut, but a legume, many people are allergic to nuts as well.
